Homemade muesli recipe

How can you be sure about what is in your breakfast cereal? Sure enough, so many popular breakfast cereals contain so much added sugar that it really shouldn’t be deemed healthy as it so often states on the side of the box! Muesli is often a great choice as it packs a good amount of fibre and healthy fats, but so many shop bought mueslis also contain loads of added sugar – so disappointing!

Well, fear not – muesli is incredibly simple to make and it turns out to be a lot cheaper when you make your own. It will last for weeks in an airtight container, if you don’t finish it before then.

You’ll need:

  • Airtight container
  • Rolled oats

And your choice of:

  • Raisins, dried apricots, dried apricots
  • Coconut flakes or desiccated coconut
  • Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, ground flax seeds
  • Mixed chopped nuts (macadamias, almonds, hazelnuts, cashew nuts, brazil nuts etc.)

I usually stick to the following quantities:

  • 3 parts oats
  • 1 part mixed nuts
  • 1 part mixed seeds
  • 1 part chopped dried fruit

If you don’t like dried fruit, you could leave it out and just top your muesli with fresh fruit when you serve it. You can play around with your ingredients and quantities to suit you, but it really is as simple as popping it all into a tub and stirring it up to mix the ingredients. Enjoy with milk or yoghurt for a breakfast chock full of fibre, healthy fats and protein.
